How often should you shampoo your hair?
You may be washing your hair more often than you need to. Shampooing three times a week is plenty. You have natural oils on your scalp that need to do "their thing." Daily shampooing is only necessary if oil production on the scalp is high. A clean head of hair feels fresh and smells great but over-washing can turn one's healthy locks into a pile of straw. How often you need to shampoo depends on how oily your scalp is and your hair's texture. Oil-known as sebum-travels more easily down smooth, straight hair, making it look greasier faster. Sounds a little gross, but sebum helps moisturize and waterproof the hair shaft. This is one reason why curly or coarse hair is drier. When you wash every day, you typically strip off this natural moisturizer and then have to slather it back on in the form of commercial conditioner. If you are used to washing your hair daily, it can take a few weeks to get used to a new routine. Gradually increase the days between shampooing and see if your hair becomes healthier and takes more time to appear dirty as a result. Ultimately, how often you shampoo is a matter of personal preference. Give it a try :)

Good tips! I really struggle with dryness in the winter. I feel like Head and Shoulders apple shampoo and the dry scalp care conditioner is the only thing my scalp can handle. But I'm sure it's terrible for my hair. What do I do? Kenra isn't even helping. My scalp is so incredibly dry. I read on Amazon that I should get some jojoba essential oil and mix it with my shampoo.
ReplyDeleteIf that is what works for you I would keep using it. It is good to change it up every now and then, because your hair has memory and it is good to have a different kind every now and then. Try an avocado mask with some coconut oil or some leave in deep conditioners and leave them on for 30 mins :)
DeleteI never knew that until last year when I went to the hairdresser! She told me the same thing - 3 or 4 times a week (or every other day), and use the dry shampoo for touch ups if you're oily between. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYes, dry shampoo is good for the in between. They even just came out with a dry conditioner too. I will be doing a post on my favorite hair products soon :)
DeleteSince having my second and third kids, my youngest being 20 months, I've noticed my hair has gotten increasingly oily. I've gone from being able to wash it a couple times a week to needing to wash it every other day. Dry shampoo has become my best friend by allowing me to go one more day.
ReplyDeleteI feel like I'm in a catch 22 situation since my ends can be very dry and in need of product but that same product only adds to the oily at my roots. :/
Is there a shampoo or product you suggest for oily hair? In my research I'm finding there's not too much that can be done cure wise...whether it's genetics or hormone related you just kinda have go with it and gather the tools to treat it best.
It's amazing all the changes having babies can bring to your body!
Thanks!
Yes, Hormones can play a big part up to 2 years after having a baby from your skin to your hair. Dry Shampoo is very nice to use in between (you can use too much though, so just spray 2 -3 times and rub it all in). If you are seeing the ends that are very dry try any type of serum to help give you some moisture on the ends (just don't put it all through the top, just on the mid shaft to the ends) One that I really like is Argan Oil. There are some shampoos out there that have a lot of conditioning properties in them which for some hair types it can be too much. One that I really like that gives you just enough conditioning without over doing it is the Kiwi moisture line. I hope that helps :)
